Japanese Notan
Vocabulary: space, positive space, negative space, symmetry, Notan, asymmetrical
Space – the area, above, below, between, within, and around objects in a piece of art
Positive space – the shapes or forms, the main objects in an art
Negative space- the space that surrounds the main objects , between, around, inside around the main objects in an artwork
Notan – a Japanese word which means “dark and light”
Symmetry- both sides of an axis line are the same
Asymmetry – each side of an axis line are different yet equal
Materials: 12 x 12” black construction paper, 12 x 12” white construction paper, 6 x6” white construction paper, 6 x 6” black construction paper, scissors, exacto -knife if small pieces, envelope and alligator clips. (YOU MAY USE COLOR COMPLIMENTS ALSO)
Directions:
1. Lightly!!!! Draw on each edge of the 6 x 6” white construction paper, shapes, but not on the corners…. (You must cut from all four sides. Do not cut off the corners and don’t go past the center of the paper with any designs)
2. Clip both the white 6 x 6” square and 6 x 6” black square together with alligator clips
3. Cut out each side making sure you do not cut into the background unnecessarily.
4. Immediately Save all pieces of cut out in the envelope
5. Assemble the black pieces onto the white paper and the white pieces onto the black paper, so that they are symmetrical to the negative space.
6. Carefully glue down the middle piece in the middle of the paper, then glue down the little pieces on the line of symmetry
NO OOZING GLUE!!!
